Home Schooling Considerations

We've bumped into folks who hold both extreme views that home schooling is the only way to educate your kids and maintain your values, and those who hold that public or private schooling provide a superior education for your children.
You've got to keep in mind the base assumptions each party is making, and also consider that there is PLENTY of middle ground.
My husband has met virtual illiterates who were home schooled, and he's met public-educated individuals (having Master's and Ph.D. letterings after their names) who have little common sense.
Very little is cut and dried about modern education, and its various forms.
Personally, my husband isn't afraid of the public school system, but he suspects it has inherent flaws in it's underlying philosophies. He occasionally mumbles about the whole Horace Mann philosophy of being able to educate goodness into a person and reform them has proven a failed model, and that morality isn't best learned in an amoral system.
However, he's also reluctant to insist on home schooling and shelter our child (and ourselves) from common life events that build character, offer opportunities for us to teach our child big things in light of those events, and make us all a little stronger.
